It is no coincidence that the Canary Islands are historically renowned for their wide variety of exquisite wines. The cultivation of vines in the archipelago began in the 15th century, when the conquistadors brought the first grape varieties. They realised that the islands had ideal climatic and soil conditions for the cultivation and marketing of wine.
Canary Island wines are as diverse as each of the seven islands. The reason for this is that one or more different types of grape are grown on each of them. In fact, it is estimated that more than 100 varieties are grown on our land.
The volcanic origin of the archipelago and its special orography mean that viticulture is carried out in a traditional way, with hardly any mechanical processes.
All these elements contribute to producing wines that are unique in the Canary Islands, whose production process and flavour are conditioned by the salinity of the sea, the mineral-rich soil and the diversity of the landscape.
Wines with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)
All the Canary Islands, except Fuerteventura, have Protected Designations of Origin. Some of them are Ycoden-Daute-Isora, Abona, Tacoronte-Acentejo, Valle de la Orotava and Gran Canaria, among others.

One of the best known wine varieties of the Canary Islands is made mainly in Lanzarote from the volcanic Malvasia, a type of grape that is grown on the slopes and valleys of the volcanoes and is harvested by hand.
Malvasia wine has a pale yellow colour and a sweet, fruity taste with hints of tropical fruits. It is commonly used as a dessert wine or to pair with sweet dishes.
